User support in focus

New director of user support and an opportunity to join user advisory committee

NAISS focuses on user experience

Erik Lindahl, NAISS director

As the leaves turn yellow and Arrhenius has been officially inaugurated, we are focusing on another core activity: NAISS user support, led by our new Director of User Support. Alongside these new regular newsletters, we are restructuring the user support teams to expand outreach, onboarding and training, and merging some teams to reach critical mass. You'll hear more at the upcoming NAISS User Forum in Stockholm on 6-7 October. There, Jeff Hammond from Nvidia will give a keynote on what's possible with the system, including agentic AI coding for advanced HPC software development, and Swedish users will share their early experiences with Arrhenius, for example in parallel AI training.

We are also continuing the distributed events organized by the User Support Advisory Committee under Marie Skepö's lead, with the next one planned in Kalmar on 25–26 February next year. After several years of fantastic work, Marie has decided it's time to find her successor, so volunteer for USAC yourself or suggest good candidates!

Finally, at the EuroHPC User Days in Dublin last week, the Sweden AI Factory was repeatedly held up as a role model for both academia and industry. This is entirely thanks to the hard work of Rossen Apostolov and his team, and we plan to draw more on their expertise across all NAISS AI support activities.

NAISS welcomes Director of User Support and Training

Debasmita Samaddar has joined NAISS as Director of User Support and Training. A plasma physicist by training, she has worked in nuclear fusion research at the UK Atomic Energy Authority and in research computing in Chicago. Along the way she was, in her own words, "one of those difficult users" who relied on support staff to get through her PhD. That experience shapes how she approaches support today. In the full interview, she talks about listening before making changes, why she wants to hear about problems as well as successes, and her plans to make every user feel seen.

Help shape NAISS user support: meet us at the User Forum

NAISS is building its User Support Advisory Committee (USAC), and we're looking for users who want to take part. The committee brings user perspectives and ideas directly into how NAISS develops its support and infrastructure. Members will have a real opportunity to influence the services they rely on in their own work. If you're interested, the NAISS User Forum on 6-7 October in Stockholm is a good opportunity to meet us, learn more about the committee and discuss what role you could play. You're also welcome to contact info@naiss.se if you are interested and cannot attend the user forum.

NAISS Large Fall 2026 and LUMI Sweden Fall 2026 now open

The two calls close 16 Oct at 15:00 CEST. This is the first Large round in which Arrhenius replaces all previous NAISS systems. To encourage our largest users to apply for EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) resources, there are now upper limits to the capacity that you can request, both for individual resources and for the sum of compute resources. The limits are both on individual compute resources and as a whole. Other news introduced this spring is that users must register publications resulting from the projects (and acknowledging the use of NAISS resources) via DOIs in SUPR, financial support is entered in a table with a row for each grant or similar instead of being a free-text field, NAISS has changed from the NAISS User Agreement to the NAISS General Terms of Use, and that users now have to acknowledge that NAISS storage resources are to be used for active data only.

Academic researchers welcome

Explore EuroHPC JU machines through ENCCS (info@enccs.se). ENCCS helps academic researchers access and get started on some of Europe’s largest supercomputers. This access complements your national computing resources with opportunities to test ideas and to develop, optimise and scale codes on different hardware architectures. It can enable you to run computationally demanding research at a much larger scale. Moreover, ENCCS offers regular hands-on training on these machines for more efficient use of the resources. You bring the research. We help you reach the compute.
